Established in 2014 by the National Housing Center Board of Governors, the Exemplary Service to Home Building Award recognizes individuals whose outstanding contributions have advanced the housing industry through leadership, community and economic development, housing affordability initiatives, improved access to homeownership, ethical business practices, and innovative solutions that strengthen home building and the many businesses and services that support it.
Jerry Carter is a highly respected leader in home building, who left his mark on the industry during his decades long career. Jerry began his career in 1972 when he founded Jerry Carter Homes, Inc. Over the years, Carter built and remodeled countless custom homes and commercial buildings throughout North Texas. He also completed several public works projects throughout Garland, including City Hall, the Council Work Session Chambers and the Emergency Command Center.
Carter’s leadership extended well beyond the jobsite. He served on numerous boards and committees for the City of Garland, including the Housing Standards Board and the Building and Fire Codes Advisory Appeals Board. His efforts were instrumental in adopting residential energy codes and advancing development standards to address soil conditions and reduce regulatory burdens.
A past president of both the Dallas Builders Association and the Texas Association of Builders, Carter has consistently championed initiatives that strengthened the industry. His steady leadership guided the Texas Association of Builders across the challenges of the Great Recession, helping ensure growth, unity, strength and resilience through one of the industry’s most difficult eras. Carter was also actively involved at the National level within NAHB, serving as Chairman for the Resolutions Committee and the State and Local Government Affairs Committee. He was recognized as a Life Director at his state and local association, and as a Senior Life Director at NAHB.
“Jerry Carter’s contributions throughout his decades-long career have left a lasting legacy on the housing industry and the communities it serves,” said NAHB Chairman Bill Owens, a home builder and remodeler from Worthington, Ohio. “He is incredibly deserving of this prestigious honor, and we are thrilled to recognize him for his significant leadership, commitment and contributions over the years.
Other Exemplary Service to Home Building Award recipients included Edward Martin.
